Air Comfort – A Leader in Safety Excellence
Scrolling on our smartphones. Enjoying an afternoon snack. Accessing our interactive in-car dashboards. Nearly all of us are guilty of multitasking in some capacity while behind the wheel. But according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving claimed the lives of 3,477 people in 2015 — with an additional 391,000 injured.
With technology literally at our fingertips 24/7/365, this dangerous trend has the ability to impact most commuters — including businesses and fleets. That’s why Air Comfort is taking steps to combat distracted driving in the workplace by utilizing a simple feature many of today’s phones are already equipped with: autoreply technology.
“While it’s convenient and tempting to make a call while we’re in the car driving from place to place, we know we shouldn’t do it because it’s simply not safe,” said Tyler Jeffrey, chief operating officer.
The companywide safety feature was implemented earlier this year. Each Air Comfort technician is now encouraged to take advantage of the driving mode found in their text message settings, which can be customized to alert clients that they are driving and will respond when it is safe to do so.
“In today’s day and age, people expect an immediate response, and this goes against that a little bit and takes time for people to get used to. It’s definitely a cultural change, but the message needs to get out to customers, suppliers and everybody else that distracted driving is dangerous,” Jeffrey said. “Until we saw a video in our safety meeting, I didn’t realize that hands-free calls are now the equivalent of drunk driving. We’re all learning and trying to do the right things so we all get home safely to our families at the end of the day.”
